In her installation ‘gehalgod’ Esther Glück (*1966, lives in Munich, Germany) issue is the problematic alliance of feminity, masculinity, power, authority, religion and death. These subjects are opposing each other in a dress that is meant to seduce in a feminine way by its luxurious fabrics, their finishing and form. The shape of individual parts of the garment, such as cape, jacket, dress and lining remind of well–known clothes of the German Chancellor Angela Merkel as well as of state robes of Queen Victoria and Queen Elizabeth. Turn around – if you turn the inside out, that which seemed to be a flirtatious lingerie top under the dress is made out of plastic bags used for the removal of corpses – of body bags.

gehalgod: sanctified The word "gehalgod" from the West Saxon, about 1000 AD, most likely comes from an Indo-European parent language. It carries signs of flexion, which the English and German have kept. The installation "gehalgod" talks about the problem of the conjunction of femininity, power, domination, death and religion. Weapons are symbols of power. Originally tools for procurement of food, they became murder weapons by internal social processes of change of organisation. The accumulation of food, land and other monopolies are corresponding to accumulation of more and better weapons. This usually takes place to protect the supremacy of the present economical and political rulers. Therefore the step to "sanctification" of weapons has actually been completed. So the murder is idealized in a society based on the exercise of power. The power of the weapon resembles the divine, is bestowed by God and is an attribute of the power conferred by God. The coat of arms is a stylized image of those weapons, marking the leaders and princes without them being obliged to carry them with thereselves. Created at the time of the Crusades it also became a hereditary family- coat-of-arms or to continue an enduring territorial-coat-of-arms. By the old notions of a defensive spell while wearing coats of arms, the leaders felt protected. (for example curved sword in Mohammed's Islamic banners, flags of Cross Crusaders) The ornamentation on the dress of representation in this installation is reminiscent of the symbolism of coat of arms, uses elements from it and alienates them. Masculinity, power, religion, money are opposing each other on a dress that wants to seduce in a feminine way by its luxurious fabrics and their processing and form. The shape of the individual parts of the garment such as cape, jacket, dress, dress lining reminiscent of well– known dresses of the German Chancellor Angela Merkel and dresses of glory of Queen Victoria and Elizabeth. Turn around – if you turn the inner life (lining) to the outside, that just showed itself as a flirty lingerie top under the dress, you could see that it is made out of plastic bags that are used, for example in war, for the removal of corpses. (body bags) Irritated and mainly to myself there comes the question of nature of femininity.

gehalgod: geheiligt
(z.B. Mohammeds Krummschwert in islamischen Bannern, Kreuz in Kreuzritterfahnen)
